He is a household name in China, a college entrance examination and postgraduate entrance examination instructor who influenced an entire generation, and an internet celebrity. He was born in Qiqihar, Heilongjiang Province, with ancestral roots in Linqing, Shandong Province, and studied (without completing) water supply and drainage engineering at Zhengzhou University. He is a co-founder of Suzhou Yantu Education Technology Co., Ltd.—a successful figure and a billionaire. None of this is the point. What matters is that Zhang Xuefeng is one of the most outspoken figures in contemporary China, offering sharp and penetrating exposure and critique of the structural social contradictions under the rule of the Chinese Communist Party. In China, outspoken critics of the CCP are not uncommon, yet they are often ruthlessly suppressed by the authorities—either imprisoned, exiled abroad, reduced to poverty and illness without influence, or dying quietly. Someone like Zhang Xuefeng, who curses them while amassing great wealth, is exceedingly rare—unprecedented before and unlikely to be seen again, truly an extraordinary anomaly.
