He was 109 years old. While Xi Jinping was presiding over the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, old Song quietly departed this world. Today we will talk about this man—Song Ping. Within the Party, Song Ping had long been called the “number one elder.” He was born in 1917, older even than the history of the Chinese Communist Party itself. The Chinese Communist Party was founded in 1921; by 2026 it had existed for 105 years, while Song Ping lived to 109. By the time of his death, his Party membership had approached ninety years. This made him one of the oldest senior officials in the CCP with the longest Party membership on record. One could say that such a record is almost unprecedented. Originally, Song Ping was not particularly prominent within the Party, but after Hu Jintao came to power he showed him great respect, and Song Ping was thus quickly elevated to the position of the “number one elder.” Song Ping’s hometown is Ju County, Shandong, and he came from a peasant background. In 1934 he went to Beiping to study, first enrolling in the College of Agriculture at Peking University, and in 1935 transferring to the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University. During his time at school he came into contact with communist theory. In that era China was in turmoil, and university education was extremely unstable. After the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan in 1937, Tsinghua University, Peking University, and Nankai University moved south, first forming a temporary university in Changsha, and later relocating to Kunming to establish the National Southwest Associated University. Against the background of a nationwide surge in the anti-Japanese national salvation movement, Song Ping joined the Chinese Communist Party in December 1937. After joining the Party, he abandoned his university studies and went to Yan’an to study in the second class of the Yan’an Marxist–Leninist Institute. After graduation he successively worked in CCP institutions such as the Yan’an Marxist–Leninist Institute, the CCP Southern Bureau, and Xinhua News Agency. According to the recollections of some insiders within the system, Xi Jinping’s mother, Qi Xin, always called Song Ping “Teacher Song.” After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, Song Ping participated in the Kuomintang–Communist negotiations as Zhou Enlai’s secretary, and was later transferred to the Northeast, where he took part in the takeover of Shenyang during the Liaoshen Campaign. Objectively speaking, such credentials are indeed very senior within the CCP. Inner Mongolia borders Gansu, and cadres from the two regions have frequently exchanged positions. Over the years I have also heard quite a few stories about Song Ping. He was low-key in manner, steady in temperament, and gentle in speech, rarely losing his temper. He was usually taciturn, not fond of arguing or contending. Those who did not know him often felt he was kind and solid, while those who knew him described him as “kind-faced but dark-hearted.”
