An investor selling a put option collects a premium from a buyer seeking downside protection—just as an insurer collects premiums from policyholders seeking coverage against loss.​​ Probability-Based Profit Models Like insurers relying on actuarial data, successful option sellers depend on statistical edges. They collect many small, likely-to-expire-worthless premiums, expecting that the cumulative gain will exceed occasional large payouts (losses).
