In the 1950s, as the global aviation industry rushed toward bigger, heavier, and more complex fighter jets, one man deliberately went the opposite way. That man was William Petter, one of Britain’s most gifted and stubborn aircraft designers, and the aircraft was the Folland Gnat. While companies like Hawker, Supermarine, and English Electric pursued large air-defence fighters such as the Hunter and Lightning, Petter believed the future of air combat lay in something radically different: a lightweight, simple, affordable jet fighter that could be built quickly, flown hard, and sustained in wartime conditions. Petter’s credentials were beyond dispute. Before and during World War II, he had already designed legendary aircraft such as the Westland Lysander and Westland Whirlwind, contributed to improvements on the Supermarine Spitfire, and later led the development of the English Electric Canberra bomber while laying the groundwork for the English Electric Lightning interceptor. But Petter’s uncompromising personality repeatedly put him at odds with management and government ministries. By 1949, he had left English Electric and taken control of Folland Aircraft Ltd in Hamble, Hampshire, where he became both Managing Director and Chief Engineer. There, he made a controversial assessment: the British Ministry of Supply was backing fighters that were becoming too heavy, too expensive, and too complex to mass-produce in a real war. Drawing directly from his wartime experience, and the cancellation of the Whirlwind due to production complexity, Petter argued that NATO’s air forces were repeating old mistakes. To prove his point, Folland funded a private demonstrator aircraft: the Fo-139 Midge, which first flew in August 1954. Powered by a modest Armstrong Siddeley Viper turbojet producing just 1,640 lbf of thrust, the Midge still reached 600 mph and impressed test pilots from multiple countries. Encouraged by the results, Petter pushed ahead with a fully operational fighter. The result was the Gnat F.1, powered by the Bristol Siddeley Orpheus engine delivering 4,700 lbf of thrust. Barely 28.5 feet long, with a wingspan just over 22 feet, the Gnat was smaller than most piston fighters, even lighter than a fully loaded Spitfire, yet could climb at 20,000 feet per minute and approach Mach 1. Armed with two 30mm ADEN cannons and capable of carrying bombs and rockets, the Gnat was designed as a pure dogfighter. In trials against the Hawker Hunter, it repeatedly came out on top. Despite this, the aircraft struggled politically. A NATO lightweight fighter competition saw the Gnat ranked last, not due to performance, but because Petter refused to redesign the fuselage to accept low-pressure rough-field tires. The competition ultimately selected the Fiat G.91, an aircraft that saw limited service outside Italy and Germany. The Royal Air Force declined the Gnat as a frontline fighter, having already committed to the Hunter. However, they saw its potential as an advanced trainer. This led to the two-seat Gnat T.1, which entered RAF service in 1962 and soon became famous as the original aircraft of the Red Arrows. Internationally, the Gnat found its true calling. The Indian Air Force adopted the aircraft enthusiastically, producing it under license at Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. During the 1965 Indo-Pakistani War, Indian Gnats famously took on Pakistan Air Force F-86 Sabres, shooting down seven Sabres while losing only two Gnats, earning the aircraft the nickname “Sabre Slayer.” Smaller fleets also operated the Gnat, including Finland and Yugoslavia, each with mixed political and operational outcomes, but universally praising the aircraft’s agility and combat performance. Though eventually replaced by the Hawker Siddeley Hawk, the Gnat left a lasting legacy, not just as a trainer or display aircraft, but as proof that bigger was not always better in the jet age. This is the story of the fighter NATO misunderstood, the jet Britain didn’t fully embrace, and the tiny aircraft that embarrassed much bigger machines.
