There's a lot of different options on generating electricity with falling water, and I've tried to choose the one that will generate the most efficiently for the setup that I have. There's only 15 feet of head to work with, maybe a bit more, but I can't run a Pelton wheel with that low pressure, so I need to do something different. Options include a cross flow turbine, a water wheel, an Archidemes screw, an axial flow turbine, among others. I've decided to go with an axial flow turbine, also called a propeller turbine, as I feel it will be the most cost effective overall and should be able to produce a good amount of energy. But what do I know? I've never done this before! That's sort of my standard operating procedure though, so hopefully I'll get something figured out. In this video I discuss the site, some different options, and explain the overall plan. Then I do some excavation to dig up some 6" schedule 40 PVC that was installed as a dry hydrant but was never used. I thought that would be pretty easy...I was wrong.
