China, the undisputed leader of the global critical minerals supply chain, produces nearly 90 per cent of the world's rare earth magnets. Used in everything from our smartphones to submarines, the export controls of critical minerals have provided Beijing with enormous political and economic leverage. For decades, wealthy nations around the world were happy to rely on Chinese rare earth supplies. Seeking to reduce dependence on China, the US President has recently signed a series of deals on his Asia tour to secure supply of critical minerals. But with China significantly ahead in the manufacturing and engineering of crucial rare earth components, can competitors really catch up?
