Quantum computing is often treated like something straight out of science fiction - a mysterious technology that will one day replace classical computers in a single miraculous leap, just as transistors once replaced vacuum tubes. In this episode, I had the amazing opportunity to sit down with Prof. Dr. Christian B. Mendl from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to break down the most common misconceptions and talk about what quantum computing can realistically achieve. Prof. Mendl studied physics and mathematics at TUM and completed his PhD at LMU Munich in 2012. During his postdoc, he worked on statistical physics before receiving a Feodor Lynen fellowship from the Humboldt Foundation, which took him to Stanford University to study models for high-temperature superconductors using quantum Monte Carlo methods. In 2017 he became a Junior Professor at TU Dresden and, in 2019, joined TUM as a Rudolf Mößbauer Assistant Professor. His research focuses on computational physics for quantum systems, quantum computing and non-equilibrium statistical physics.
