These paintings served to tell not only the story of the family to itself (whether or not it was true) but to project that narrative to any and everyone who visited the home. And while the celebration of opulence has gone out of fashion and come back into fashion as many times as couture, the paintings remain impressive and a record of some of the finest artist work in America. At least when well cared for and preserved.
