Greta Thunberg’s attempts to tie Gaza to “ecocide” demonstrate her total ignorance

The Global “Sumud Flotilla”, comprising around twenty boats loaded with food, medicine and other supplies, set sail from Barcelona on Sunday. Its leaders promised to defy Israel by delivering “lifesaving aid” directly to the Strip. But after only a few hours in the Mediterranean, the mission was over. “Due to unsafe weather conditions, we conducted a sea trial and then returned to port to allow the storm to pass,” the group admitted in a statement. They cited “over 30-knot winds” and insisted the retreat was to “prioritise the safety and wellbeing” of participants. Among those forced to turn back were Greta Thunberg, former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, and councillor Jordi Coronas. The storm accomplished what the Israeli navy didn’t have to: sending the flotilla home. The flotilla is part of a long tradition of publicity-driven attempts to “break the siege” of Gaza. They generate headlines, activist selfies, and angry hashtags. But while Greta and friends were bouncing back to Barcelona, real aid was moving into Gaza — not by yacht, but by truck, pipeline and logistics hubs. Some numbers from the past week alone: • 2,200 trucks collected and distributed from the Gazan side of Kerem Shalom and Zikim crossings. • 1,500 trucks of food and supplies entered through the crossings. • A UAE-funded water pipeline from Egypt began serving 600,000 people, providing 15 litres per person daily. • 325 Gazan children needing medical treatment (with caregivers) exited via Kerem Shalom. Yesterday’s COGAT update added another 320 trucks, including UN fuel tankers for essential systems. Which Model Works? Here’s the striking contrast: The Global Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) has distributed 148 million meals to date, over 1.5 million meals just yesterday. Every single one of its trucks reached civilians directly. By the UN’s own admission, only 12% of its trucks reached their destination without diversion. In other words, non-UN aid — nearly 70% of the total — is vastly more effective. Aid routed through the UN becomes entangled with Hamas, which skims, steals and manipulates it for power. That may suit Hamas. It does not serve hungry civilians. Israel, meanwhile, has allocated $500 million for humanitarian aid, opened four new distribution centres to bypass Hamas, and pushed through 950 trucks this summer alone. Beyond the Stunts The contrast could not be clearer. Greta’s flotilla turned back after a few hours at sea. Israel and its partners moved hundreds of trucks, tonnes of food, and a functioning water supply into Gaza in the same time frame. Theatrics may grab headlines, but they don’t fill bellies. And they certainly don’t challenge Hamas’s stranglehold on aid. If Greta truly wants to help Gazans, perhaps she should look at the real numbers, not the stage-managed symbolism.
