Winter the dolphin lost her tail after becoming entangled in fishing gear. For most dolphins, that would have been the end. But the technology that allowed her to survive didn’t come from Hollywood or marine biology alone — it traces its roots back to the Civil War, and to one wounded soldier who refused to accept the limits of early prosthetics.
