Video Description

A project to build and sail a modern Viking ship called the Draken Harald Hårfare aims to test theories about ancient Viking voyages. The ship was constructed using historical methods, but during sea trials, it suffered a mast failure and a critical structural weakness when the keel's nails sheared off. This setback led to a major rebuild and highlighted the challenges of ancient shipbuilding. Researchers at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde, Denmark, study artifacts like the Skuldelev ships to understand how Vikings built and repaired vessels, discovering that ancient ships were also prone to failure and often rebuilt with recycled materials.
