How Radioactive Shrimp May Have Gotten Into America
Description
In August, the FDA recalled Walmart’s Great Value frozen shrimp in 13 states because it was potentially radioactive. The shellfish in question were farm-raised in Indonesia. This isn’t the first time imported shrimp has reached the US with unhealthy banned chemicals. In February, the FDA turned away shipments from India because of illegal levels of antibiotics. But despite cases of tainted crustaceans, 90% of the shrimp Americans eat is imported. That’s because it’s so cheap. And that low price tag has driven the cost of American wild-caught shrimp down with it, hurting Louisiana fishermen who’ve spent decades catching it in the Gulf of Mexico. So how does chemical-laced shrimp make it past the US border? And why did imported shrimp choke out wild-caught crustaceans to begin with? 00:00 - Introduction 1:11 - Shrimp Po’ Boys 4:14 - Shrimp Factory 6:05 - History of Shrimp in Louisiana 7:25 - The Rise of Imported Shrimp 8:06 - Catching Shrimp with “Knuckles” 11:08 - Shrimpers Struggling 12:12 - Life on the Shrimp Docks 15:17 - Controversies of Imported Shrimp 18:01 - Antibiotics in Indian Shrimp Farms 19:29 - How Unsafe Shrimp Gets Through US Borders 20:46 - Mislabeling in Restaurants 22:43 - Solutions? 25:08 - Credits ------------------------------------------------------ #foodrecall #banned #chemicals #bigbusiness MORE BIG BUSINESS VIDEOS: The Secrets Behind America's No. 1 Hot Sauce https://youtu.be/iEYsdIO7u7M India Grows 80% of Turmeric.
