And while all-electric blue water sailboats probably won't be mainstream for a while, hybrid set ups are quickly becoming the industry standard and it is game-changing! Let's be real though. Diesel isn't going anywhere (for now) when it comes to blue water cruising. But, these hybrid systems aren't about eliminating diesel (be it an engine or a generator) as much as they are about maximizing efficiency. Because hello redundancy, increased range, flexibility, and reduced dependency on diesel fuel. And, unlike the slow evolution we've seen with diesel engines over the decades, this year alone has brought us at least three brand-new electric propulsion systems designed from the ground up. Even major players like Yanmar and Volvo Penta are now entering a space previously dominated by smaller, innovative companies. So, we wanted to share our recent explorations into the latest hybrid and electric motors showcased at METS in Amsterdam, and give you our two cents on it all. ______________ WE’RE JASON AND NIKKI WYNN. Because curiosity is the key to unlocking life. It pushes us outside our comfort zone, softens our assumptions, and helps us embrace the great unknown. GETTING OFF-GRID Our home is also our transportation and we spend weeks away from civilization and sometimes land. So self-reliance and sustainable living are a must. We've learned heaps about renewable energy, managing waste, creating safe drinking water and foraging for food. We carefully manage our resources and we’re always looking for new and better ways to do so. TALKING TO STRANGERS People are busy (even on remote islands) and travelers are a dime a dozen. It takes time to talk to strangers, and even more time to have a real connection. Going the extra mile to get to know someone is a commitment. Which is why these are our most treasured experiences. Setting off into the world with curiosity as our guide and nature as our compass. We talk to strangers and accept hospitality without fear or reservations. Both giving and receiving. ALTERNATIVE LIVING These are people who are doing things differently. Forgoing the mainstream, seeking freedom and living on the margins. Creative, unique and inspiring people who challenge our ideas of home and community.
