In the early morning hours of June 23, 2024, the city of Tampa Florida was rocked by a brutal attack. One of America's largest new-generation rap artists, Charles Jones III, aka Julio Foolio, had just been gunned down after turning 26. Foolio was a member of Jacksonville's underworld, a dark part of society that only bred bloodshed, loss, and tragedy year after year. He grew up in the city's rough neighborhoods, saw death before his teenage years, and had a gun in his hands before he turned 20. Foolio's death was significant due to his status in pop culture, but hailing from a city where death was a part of life for many, his murder was just another gang slaying, committed by armed gangsters who took any opportunity to stack their cash. But go back 7 years and the entire picture unfolds. Foolio had been at war with another rapper, Yungeen Ace, who was a bitter rival gangster from another hood. Foolio's death was the bottle-cap to years of tit-for-tat slayings, murders that took the lives of rappers, gangland killers, and even children. And in the months following Foolio's slaying, more murders were to come. But in a city where the homicide rate averaged out to almost 1 every 3 days in 2023, Foolio's death was just another murder in a multi-year gang war. A man who'd taken lives, made millions, and survived 3 shootings in the past 4 years, to the extent that some were genuinely convinced he was a voodoo practicing demon, died on the night of his birthday after sharing his location online.
