On November 18, 1978, the “Jonestown Massacre” occurred in Jonestown, Guyana and the world was in shock. More than 900 members of the religious group called the Peoples Temple “were reported dead under the direction of their leader Jim Jones.” Most people had never heard of the Peoples Temple or the Reverend Jim Jones, and just as many could not Guyana on a map.
