We take a look at Japan's "German" WWII Fighter: The Kawasaki Ki-61 Hien – the only mass-produced Japanese fighter with a liquid-cooled V-12 engine, often mistaken by Allies for a captured Messerschmitt Bf 109 or Italian Macchi C.202 due to its sleek, European-inspired design. Nicknamed "Tony" by the Allies, this agile interceptor stood out in Japan's radial-engine-dominated air force during the Pacific War. The origins of the Ki-61 date back to 1939-1941, born from Japan's need for advanced fighters amid the Sino-Japanese War, powered by the licensed Daimler-Benz DB 601 engine in its Japanese Ha-40 version producing around 1,175 hp. Kawasaki's team refined it as a lightweight, maneuverable air superiority fighter, contrasting the heavier Ki-60 interceptor, and with self-sealing fuel tanks and a fuel-injected engine, it addressed vulnerabilities like those in the A6M Zero. Development milestones included its first flight in December 1941, where it outperformed rivals in 1942 fly-offs against a Bf 109E, P-40E, and others, armed with twin 12.7mm Ho-103 machine guns and speeds up to 560 km/h. Its combat debut saw it enter service in late 1942, with action from the Doolittle Raid to New Guinea and Rabaul, frustrating U.S. pilots by diving well, climbing effectively, and resisting fires, which prompted calls for more P-38 Lightnings. Later variants like the Ki-61-II added power but faced engine woes, leading to the legendary Ki-100 radial-engine conversion in 1945. Despite early successes, the Ki-61 struggled with unreliable engines, tropical maintenance issues, material shortages, and late-war upgrades that couldn't match Allied powerhouses like the P-51 Mustang or F6F Hellcat.
