Video Description

Major Dick Winters, portrayed by Damien Lewis in "Band of Brothers", talks about shooting the young German soldier in Holland during WWII. During Easy Company’s attack on the two German companies on the other side of the dike in Holland, Winters outpaced the rest of the men and came eye to eye with a young German soldier who began to smile at him just before Dick Winters fired. After listening to his comments, we explain what the series changed about the attack, including Winters encounter with the smiling German soldier. The included clips are excerpts from the Dick Winters interview that Rep. John Payne conducted in the early 2000s.
