Introduced by the Burroughs Corporation in the mid-1950s, Nixie tubes were cold-cathode numerical displays used in various devices including scientific instruments and stock tickers through the 1970s, when they were largely replaced in the West by more sophisticated and cost-effective display technologies. However, they remained in production in the Soviet Union until its collapse in the early 1990s, and have recently experienced a surge of popularity among electronic hobbyists for their unique retro aesthetics.
