We were taught the Amazon was pristine wilderness—barely touched by humans, home only to small, scattered tribes. Then in January 2024, LiDAR scans revealed something hiding beneath the jungle canopy in Ecuador. Not a village. Not a settlement. A vast urban network of 15 interconnected cities. Six thousand residential platforms. Wide, straight roads running for 12 miles. Sophisticated drainage systems. Agricultural terraces covering 300 square kilometers. At its peak, between 10,000 and 30,000 people lived here—a population comparable to Roman-era London. And it's 2,500 years old, making it the oldest and largest urban complex ever found in the Amazon. For 25 years, he kept digging. The scale remained hidden. In 2015, everything changed. The Ecuadorian government funded a LiDAR survey of the valley. LiDAR (light detection and ranging) uses planes equipped with laser sensors that fire pulses through the forest canopy. By measuring the return time, computers can digitally strip away the trees, revealing the original landscape as it existed thousands of years ago. The LiDAR revealed 15 distinct settlements spread across the valley—five large urban centers and ten smaller communities. The cities weren't random. They were planned. Each settlement featured clusters of rectangular earthen platforms (66 feet long by 33 feet wide) arranged around central plazas and distributed along wide, straight streets. Unlike the Incas or Maya who built with stone, the people of the Upano Valley had no access to stone deep in the Amazon, so they engineered everything from soil. The LiDAR showed rectangular agricultural fields interspersed with drainage canals to manage massive amounts of rainfall. On hillsides surrounding the settlements, terraced gardens climbed the slopes, growing corn, manioc, sweet potatoes, and yucca. This wasn't a society barely surviving in the jungle. This was "Garden Urbanism"—an entirely human-engineered landscape where cities and managed forests existed together. The scale is staggering: more than 6,000 earthen platforms across the valley. Population estimates suggest at least 10,000 people lived in the region at any given time, potentially as many as 15,000 to 30,000 at its peak. "This shows a very dense occupation and an extremely complicated society," said Michael Heckenberger, a University of Florida archaeologist not involved in the study. The sites were occupied for roughly 1,000 years (from 500 BCE to around 600 CE) and then abandoned. Rostain theorizes the decline may be linked to eruptions from the nearby Sangay volcano, one of the most active in Ecuador. Whatever the cause, the people left. And for 1,400 years, the jungle reclaimed the platforms, the roads, the plazas. Until LiDAR stripped the vegetation away.
