The filming of Disney’s Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger tides was packed with real danger and sword handling mishaps. This movie still holds the record for being the most expensive film ever made even ten years later. Partially due to the 1,112 shots of CGI. From Blackbeard’s Queen Anne’s Revenge to the HMS Providence there’s no shortage of pirate ships in this movie. It touts pirates, mermaids, zombies… pretty much everything that you’ve come to expect from a Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and more. Behind the scenes, Rob Marshall took the helm from Gore Verbinski as the franchise’s new director. He boldly chose to shoot the movie using 3D cameras. On Stranger Tides brings back beloved characters such as Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp, as well as Geoffrey Rush and Kevin McNally. We may have lost Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly But it’s hard to be upset when we gained Penelope Cruz as the franchise’s first female pirate. The fourth movie in the installment also brought in Ian McShane as Blackbeard. Teenage Robbie Kay gets caught up in ropes. Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz’s fight choreography is a perfectly executed dance. Even while Cruz is pregnant during filming and needing to call on her sister as a body double a few times. Creating the mermaids used a mixture of moulds, CGI, and Olympic swimmers. With such a large-scale production, a-list actors and state-of the art technology, it’s no wonder this pirate movie cost so much!
