It's spring which in Washington State means unpredictable weather, and a challenging situation for most backpackers. In the valleys and on the coasts the weather is warm and inviting, but up in the mountains winter continues and the snow is soft, deep and avalanche prone. Many backpackers wait impatiently for the snow to melt, and most will be waiting until almost July! Finding a traversable trail can be tough. Nevertheless I was desperate to get out backpacking for my first trip of spring and so uper last minute I chucked all my gear into my pack, hit the road up into the Cascade mountains near where I live, and arrived at the trail fairly late in the afternoon. I hoped for a cozy and fun little solo adventure to start the backpacking season, but there was one little problem - it was dumping rain and a thick fog had enveloped the entire mountain...
