But let's get started and check out the best places you don't want to miss when coming to Sarajevo. Sarajevo is nestled in a lush green valley along the Miljacka River and surrounded by mountains. It has a rich and diverse history that dates back over 500 years. Founded by the Ottomans in the 15th century, the city quickly became an important cultural, religious, and commercial center in the region. Sarajevo's strategic location on the crossroads of East and West attracted people of various ethnicities, religions, and cultures, leading to its multicultural character. Sarajevo's more recent past has been marked by the grim events during the Bosnian War in the 1990s when it was besieged by Bosnian Serb forces for nearly four years. The siege of Sarajevo resulted in extensive destruction, loss of life, and suffering for the city's residents.
