We upgraded our drop rig with an industrial-grade accelerometer and oscilloscope capturing 150,000 data points every second so we can see exactly how much G-force reduction the RhinoShield AirX can provide. TEST NOTES: - All drops were conducted from 1.5 meters (≈5 feet) onto a steel plate. - Tests focused on corner drops, which generate higher peak G-forces than face or back drops because the impact energy is concentrated into a much smaller area. - A linear rail system with an electromagnet was used to release the cable in sync with the drop machine, minimizing drag and ensuring more consistent drops. - A catch box was used to contain rebounds so the measurements reflected the initial impact only. - Data was captured using an industrial-grade triaxial accelerometer (rated to 5,000 Gs) paired with a signal conditioner + oscilloscope, recording 150,000 samples per second. - Results include both baseline (no case) and case-protected drops, with multiple trials run to account for outliers. - Consistency testing was done for up to 10 drops per case to measure durability as well as peak impact reduction. - This experiment was as fun as it was nerdy — and definitely pushed our lab setup further than ever before.
