Smokey Yunick’s involvement with the 1969 Ford Boss 302 engine represents one of the most fascinating and innovative chapters in American racing history. Ford tasked Yunick—a legendary mechanic and racing engineer—with developing and preparing a Boss 302 Mustang for high-profile competition, and he brought his trademark ingenuity to the project. The car was originally built by Kar Kraft in Michigan as a turnkey race car and featured numerous modifications to optimize it for track success.​ Engineering and Modifications The 1969 Boss 302 engine combined a Windsor 302 block with Cleveland 351 cylinder heads, creating an engine renowned for high-revving capability, excellent airflow, and robust durability. For racing, Yunick’s Boss 302 featured several additional performance tweaks: Twin 1,050 cfm Holley Dominator carburetors on a “Cross-Boss” manifold for maximum airflow.​ Highly modified exhaust system enabled by switching to an Australian Falcon right-hand drive steering box, freeing up space for huge custom headers.​ Custom bellhousing with a reverse rotation starter to clear the header system.​ Lincoln four-wheel disc brakes, magnesium racing wheels, boxed and relocated suspension components for improved geometry, and a legal Trans-Am roll cage.​ Racing-tuned engine with forged internals, solid lifter camshaft, and an extremely high compression ratio—race tune versions produced upwards of 470 bhp and could rev toward 8,000 rpm.​ Smokey Yunick at Talladega, 1969 Ford shifted its goals for Yunick’s Mustang from SCCA Trans-Am to NASCAR’s Grand Touring (GT) series, entering the car in the 1969 Talladega 400-mile NASCAR GT event. Bunkie Blackburn drove the now black-and-gold #3 Mustang. In qualifying, the car set a scorching lap at 176.477 mph, earning pole position. During the race, the Boss Mustang dominated early, quickly lapping the field and looking poised for a commanding win until a failed rocker arm forced its retirement before mid-race.​ Legacy and Mystery Smokey Yunick’s Ford Boss 302 was noted not just for its speed but for the radical, clever engineering that characterized Yunick’s approach. After Talladega, the car’s career shifted to short-track racing and it later underwent careful restoration. The Boss 302 itself earned an almost mythic status: street versions were officially rated at 290 hp, but racing models delivered 400–470+ hp, and private tuners later extracted even more power.
