During a recent stream, Grubb said: I’ve heard that there will be a PlayStation ‘something’ – either a State of Play or a Showcase, next month in May, so this is probably going to be there. The ‘this’ he was referring to is Silent Hill 2, the remake that was recently classified by the ESRB and given an M for Mature rating. On Monday the PlayStation Portal received a new firmware update to version 2.06, and Nguyen later confirmed on X that it contained a fix for the hack, one his team had helped Sony to identify. “We responsibly reported the issues to PlayStation,” Nguyen wrote. “Bugs are fixed on 2.06.” Before he joined Google, Nguyen had previously released PS Vita jailbreaks and explosed PS4 vulnerabilities. However, at the time of the Portal hack’s original announcement, Nguyen made it clear that his team had no intention to release its details to the public. Indeed, given his current role at Google as a cloud vulnerability researcher, it appeared clear that Nguyen’s hack was simply designed to highlight the way seemingly streaming-only devices can still be exploited to run software locally. “The video quality and bitrate is day and night different, and better,” wrote one user. “Even in demanding games you can see all the details in full without pixelation.” Another user noted that they tried Final Fantasy 7, Uncharted, Madden, and Guardians of the Galaxy — all of which “look amazing” with no issues in picture quality. However, they said that some games still stutter a bit. On the stuttering front, others echoed similar sentiments while some users said that they didn’t notice any changes at all. Sony has said that those who boot up PlayStation Portal for the first time will be required to go through a series of updates concecutively as opposed to simply downloading the latest patch.
