But here it is: my very own 718 Spyder RS. You guys saw me collect this car, and now, after time with it, I’m diving deep into what makes it so special and whether it truly is the last of its kind. This car carries Porsche’s legendary RS DNA into the open air for the first time, taking inspiration from some of the greatest Porsches ever made. From the 550 Spyder that dominated races at the Nürburgring and Le Mans, to the RS 60, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder, every open-top Porsche has pushed the boundaries of performance. And now, the Spyder RS carries that legacy forward as the first-ever drop-top RS model. Power & Performance It’s essentially a GT4 RS, but with even more attitude. The GT3-derived 4.0L flat-six revs to 9,000 RPM, producing 500 PS and 450 Nm, propelling it from 0–62 mph in just 3.4 seconds, and on to a 191 mph top speed. Despite adding open-air thrills, weight has actually gone down—at 1,410 kg, it’s 40 kg lighter than the standard 718 Spyder and 5 kg lighter than the GT4 RS, making it one of the most lightweight RS models ever. But there are key changes from the GT4 RS in the #SpyderRS: • The front splitter is shorter, removing some of the aggressive downforce. • The rear wing is replaced by a ducktail spoiler for balance. • Spring rates have been softened significantly—from 110Nm to 45Nm at the front, and 140Nm to 80Nm at the rear—giving it a more compliant ride. Still, it remains a true RS, with fully adjustable suspension, uniball joints, and NACA ducts that cool the brakes just like the 991 GT3 RS. Roof & Weight-Saving One of the quirkiest parts of the Spyder RS is its removable soft top—an ultra-lightweight manual system designed to fit around the GT3 engine’s taller intake system. Porsche had to re-engineer it to be thinner while maintaining a full weather-tight seal. But if you’re chasing the ultimate lightweight experience, you can ditch the roof altogether, saving 8 kg—or go for the Weissach Package with magnesium wheels and titanium tailpipes, cutting another 10 kg. The Drive – How Does It Compare? This is where the Spyder RS truly comes alive. Sound is EVERYTHING—the intake howl, exhaust note, and wind rushing past create an immersive, raw experience that no other modern car offers. It’s a motorbike on four wheels. Compared to the GT4 RS, it’s actually more usable daily—softer suspension means better real-world compliance, while still delivering RS-level aggression when pushed. On UK roads, it hooks up better than the Cayman GT4 RS, making it more playful and adjustable through corners. How does it compare to the GT3? It’s not as sharp, but the sound, speed, and engagement make it a completely unique experience. Conclusion – The Last of its Kind? This is the last naturally aspirated, mid-engine Porsche sports car—a dying breed in today’s world of hybrids and turbos. It strips everything back to pure, unfiltered driving, proving that Porsche’s mid-engine lineup has come a long way from the early Boxsters. So, is this the greatest drop top Porsche ever?
