In 1888, a failing windmill factory in Plymouth, Michigan made a decision that would change American childhood forever. The Plymouth Iron Windmill Company became Daisy Manufacturing, and for decades, they built the Red Ryder BB gun—a three-pound masterpiece of steel and walnut that taught generations of boys about consequence, responsibility, and marksmanship. But by the 1970s, everything changed. The factory moved from Michigan to Arkansas. Steel became plastic. Wood became hollow composite. The iconic American toy that once weighed three pounds and demanded respect became a disposable piece of molded polymer. This is the story of the Daisy factory—from its origins in 1888 through its golden age in the 1940s and 50s, to its decline and the eventual destruction of the Plymouth plant. It's a story about American manufacturing, corporate decisions, product liability, and what we lost when we replaced consequence with safety.
