The Forgotten Great Trench of Saqqara | Egypt’s Underground Mystery When people think of ancient Egypt, they picture pyramids, temples, and the famous shafts of the Great Pyramid. But hidden beneath the sands of Saqqara lies something even stranger—a vast underground construction project over 1,500 feet long, carefully carved into solid bedrock, then mysteriously reburied and forgotten. Archaeologists in the early 20th century uncovered portions of this trench, finding strange niches, collapsed rock roofs, and even the start of stone steps 75 feet below ground… and then simply stopped digging. Today, thousands walk above it unaware that beneath their feet lies one of the largest subterranean mysteries in Egypt.
