The interior of the Bent Pyramid is one of the most complex and least understood of all the early pyramids. With two independent entrance systems, upper and lower chambers, and a narrow connecting tunnel, it already stands apart architecturally. Yet one of its most unusual features lies almost completely forgotten: a carefully concealed vertical shaft hidden beneath the floor of a small side passage off the lower chamber. This shaft, positioned near the geometric center of the pyramid, was discovered in 1947 by the Egyptian archaeologist Abdul Hussein but was never properly documented. Its existence is known only through a contemporary newspaper account and a later second-hand description by Ahmed Fakhry—and those two sources disagree on a crucial point: whether the bottom of the shaft was ever actually reached. Both accounts, however, describe finished masonry lining its walls and traces of incense at depth, suggesting deliberate construction and ritual activity. What makes this feature especially puzzling is not just its depth—reported to be around eight meters—but the extraordinary effort taken to hide it. A slab of natural bedrock was cut out, preserved, and later reinstalled over the shaft, then concealed beneath additional masonry and paving stones so convincingly that it remained undiscovered for thousands of years. The rest of the pyramid was effectively built on top of this hidden lid. In this video, I reconstruct how the shaft was likely excavated and concealed, examine the conflicting historical accounts, and compare the Bent Pyramid’s internal layout to Snefru’s other pyramids at Dashur, including the satellite pyramid and the Red Pyramid. I also explore several possible explanations for the shaft’s purpose—ritual, geometric, structural, or functional—while outlining the limitations of each. Ultimately, the evidence raises more questions than answers. The only way to resolve them is to reopen and fully document this forgotten feature, ensuring the shaft is excavated to bedrock and examined with modern methods. Until then, the secret vault of the Bent Pyramid remains one of the most carefully hidden—and least understood—features in Old Kingdom architecture.
