On the morning of March 21, 1960, Robert Sobukwe rose before dawn in his modest Soweto home. His wife, Veronica, boiled water on the stove so he could wash in a small tin basin. After breakfast, he picked up his pipe, kissed her goodbye, and stepped outside to meet a handful of comrades from the neighborhood. They walked together through the township’s crowded streets, workers streaming past on their way to jobs they did not choose. Sobukwe broke the silence: “Boys, we are making history.” An hour later, their anxiety lifted when they reached the Orlando police station and saw dozens of PAC members already gathered. The crowd grew quickly, laughter mixing with chants of Izwe Lethu — “the land is ours.” Women from nearby homes arrived with coffee. By 8:20am, Sobukwe led a group inside. Calm but firm, he told the officer in charge: “We have no passes. Arrest us.” Sobukwe had warned the police days earlier that the campaign against the hated pass laws would be disciplined and peaceful. But elsewhere, the day was already unraveling. Reports reached him that PAC supporters had been shot in the Vaal townships. Hours later, as he was taken away under arrest, word filtered in of something far worse. At Sharpeville, police had opened fire on the crowd. Official reports claimed 69 dead and 180 wounded. Later research revealed the toll was far higher — at least 91 killed, most shot in the back as they tried to flee. From his cell in central Johannesburg, Sobukwe finally heard the news. The police had ignored his plea for calm. Instead of restraint, they unleashed gunfire. In that moment, the apartheid state judged him more dangerous than Nelson Mandela. They would soon create an extraordinary law, the infamous “Sobukwe Clause,” written for the sole purpose of keeping him locked away even after his sentence had expired.
