The Maldives is a tropical island nation located in the Indian Ocean, southwest of Sri Lanka and India. It is made up of about 1,190 coral islands, grouped into 26 natural atolls, which extend along approximately 90,000 square kilometers of ocean, despite the fact that the total area of the country is only about 300 square kilometers, which makes it one of the smallest countries in Asia. Despite its small size, the Maldives is home to a population of approximately 520,000 people, and about a third live in the capital, Malé, one of the most densely populated cities in the world. The islands are famous for their white sand beaches, crystal clear lagoons, vibrant coral reefs and luxury water resorts, making the Maldives a prime destination for new honey divers, divers and luxury travelers. The Maldives is also the lowest country on Earth, with an average elevation of only 1.5 meters above sea level and the highest point above sea level at 2.5 meters, which makes it especially vulnerable to climate change and sea level rise. Tourism and fishing are the backbone of the economy, and marine life, such as manta rays, whale sharks, dolphins and sea turtles, plays an important role in both cultural and conservation efforts.
