The North American X-15A-2 was a unique variant of the legendary rocket plane program, designed specifically to push the envelope beyond Mach 6. While the standard X-15s were famous for their black Inconel-X skins, the A-2 variant is instantly recognizable by its striking white finish—a necessary modification to survive the extreme thermal environment of high-hypersonic flight. This video explores the engineering marvel that was the X-15A-2. Unlike its predecessors, this aircraft was rebuilt from the wreckage of the number two X-15 after a serious crash in 1962.
