Description

Can a clever rear differential can make an AWD vehicle drift?. Yep - it’s called a torque splitter, and if you peel back the metal housing you can see how it works. An input shaft delivers torque to both the left and right axles, however, each axle has a clutch pack, to fully connect or fully disconnect (both the left and right wheels) from the engine’s torque. To do this, an actuator rotates a worm gear, which compresses or opens up that specific axle’s clutch pack. Each clutch pack is independently controlled, allowing for any torque split between the two rear wheels. To initiate a drift, you simply send 100% of the rear axle torque to the outside rear tire, overloading it, and causing the vehicle to oversteer. Once sliding, maintain throttle and all four wheels will happily spin along.
