It was slightly larger than the Mk1, with a longer wheelbase and bigger body and interior, but it kept the same general shape in a more rounded style. It went on sale in most left-hand-drive markets by the end of 1983, but it didn’t reach the UK until March 1984. The Mk2 GTI came with a 1.8-litre 8-valve fuel-injected engine at launch. A faster 16-valve version, capable of over 220 km/h (137 mph), was added in 1985. Also in 1985, the first four-wheel-drive Golfs, called Golf Syncro, were introduced. The same Syncro system was later used in the supercharged G60 models, which were sold only in continental Europe from 1989. These had 120 kW (161 hp; 163 PS) and came with anti-lock brakes (ABS). A new, Mk2-based version of the Jetta was revealed in January 1984.
