In Baganda society, the palace of a kabaka, or king, became the site of his royal tomb where he continues to interact with the living. Impressive structures with large, thatched, conical roofs, only two such tomb complexes remain in Uganda. In this compelling documentary, enter the royal burial site of Kasubi, dedicated to four successive monarchs and first built in 1882 by Buganda’s 35th kabaka, Mutessa I. Learn how efforts to rebuild the Kasubi Kings Tomb after a devastating fire in 2010 were supported by studying archival documentation and an earlier restoration of its precursor at Wamala. This film is part of Africa’s Cultural Landmarks, produced by The Metropolitan Museum of Art in collaboration with World Monuments Fund. This documentary series directed by Sosena Solomon examines some of Africa’s notable cultural landscapes and their continued relevance to local communities.
