It uses the heat from compression to ignite diesel fuel. as air is squeeze tighter and tighter it heats up quickly at times reaching over 1500 degrees and when diesel fuel is sprayed into the cylinder the heat from the air alone ignites the fuel. now on a Gas engine we use a spark plug, the reason why we can't simply use compression is because gasoline is a much more voliatile substance and has a faster flame propagation, this means that if compression is too high we will get premature ignition or cylinder detonation which can be violent and distructive. whereas diesel fuel is much less volatile and can this means the compression ratio of the cylinder can be much greater and hotter without uncontrolled cylinder detonation. the second big difference is diesel engines using very high pressure fuel systems. a modern diesel engine is running north of 30,000 psi of fuel pressure whereas a typical port injection engine is usually running below 100 PSI of fuel pressure a very large difference. 00:00 - Intro 01:07 - Gas & Diesel Similarities 02:03 - No Spark Plugs!! 09:09 - High Pressure Fuel Systems 12:16 - Turbo Charged 14:11 - Gas Engines with Diesel Characteristics
