The Toyota Grand Highlander’s story begins with the Toyota Highlander, a midsize SUV that debuted in the U.S. in 2000 for the 2001 model year. The Highlander was the first midsize Toyota SUV to be built on a platform shared with a car, and that car was the Toyota Camry. That platform is a unibody platform, which has more car-like handling. These days, we have tons of crossovers and SUVs built on unibody platforms — compared to decades ago, when SUVs were built on truck-like body-on-frame platforms. Cars are famously cushier and more comfortable than trucks, meaning unibody SUVs are also cushier and more comfortable. Toyota’s sold several million regular Highlanders in the U.S. since its debut, and in 2023, the company announced a new, expanded Highlander model, literally: the all-new Toyota Grand Highlander. It still had a third-row seat setup, but with more legroom for all rows. This 2025 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid Max Platinum, as the name suggests, has a turbocharged, 2.4-liter, four-cylinder engine and hybrid system. Together, they make 362 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. That power goes through a six-speed automatic transmission to all four wheels, because this Grand Highlander is all-wheel drive (AWD). It also has a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, and it comes with Toyota’s reputation for reliability. The Grand Highlander hybrid starts at about $45,000 USD, and it has all kinds of trim levels: the base-model LE, the XLE, Limited, Nightshade, Hybrid Max Limited, and Hybrid Max Platinum. The price structure on the Hybrid Max Platinum starts at about $60,000. The colors are all tame but classy, and fitting for an urban cruiser like the Grand Highlander.
