These are bands and musicians who should have been so much bigger, but stalled out for various reasons. We did this once before and you asked for more it. So here it is.in at #8 to start off the countdown, I’ve got the London-based band Johnny Hates Jazz. These guys formed in 1985 and featured vocalist Clark Datchler, keyboardist Calvin Hayes, and bassist Mike Nocito. For a couple years, they worked the London circuit, refining their sound—a slick blend of electronic pop and emotional depth. Later dubbed sophisti-pop. In March 1987, they released "Shattered Dreams," and the song absolutely exploded. It hit Top 5 across the UK, throughout Europe, and all over Asia. The world couldn't get enough of it. And by 1988, "Shattered Dreams" finally conquered America, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hitting #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Their debut album, called Turn Back The Clock, was released on January 11, 1988 and immediately shot to #1 in the UK. They kept the UK singles coming with three more Top 20 hits. There was the anti-war anthem "I Don't Want To Be A Hero," "Turn Back The Clock", and “Heart Of Gold.” On their home turf, these guys were on fire. However, here in the US, other than Shattered Dreams, the band’s reception was muted. Turn Back the Clock peaked at #56 on the Billboard 200. And they did score a second US Top 40 single… I Don’t Want to be a Hero reached #31. But it should have been enough to launch their career in America. But right at the peak of their success, it all fell apart. Clark Datchler abruptly quit to pursue a solo career, wanting “to get on with the next thing.” Nocito and Hayes were completely blindsided and were devastated. They lost their frontman and chief songwriter, whose voice and songs defined the project. Clark would later say that he made a wrong‑headed, premature decision to leave when the band when he did. But Datchler’s departure created a deep wound… and he and Mike Nocito didn’t speak for 21 years. Datchler chose not to fight for the band name… And Nocito and Hayes regrouped with Phil Thornalley on vocals for a second Johnny Hates Jazz LP called Tall Stories. It dropped in June 1991, but failed to place on thee charts. And single success was MIA. As for Clark, he didn’t do any better. He released the solo album Raindance. His single Crown of Thorns stalled out at #100 on the UK Charts and was not well-received by critics… with Melody Maker calling it a "blow-dried, bedridden piece of Phil Collins-esque fakery
