So starting things off at #5, I’ve got a Halloween song that was released as a single in November 1983: Michael Jackson’s Thriller. Whatever you think of the man’s complicated legacy, you gotta give him props for doing something no one had done before… cashing in big time on Halloween. Before Thriller, no one could have predicted a Halloween song would become one of the highest-grossing songs ever. Of course, in hindsight, it makes sense… Thriller was a commercial juggernaut, by some estimates selling 120 million copies. It’s probably impossible to know for sure, but we all know that Thriller was big. Jackson reportedly made at least $134 million from the album in the two years following its release.
