On September 24th, a United Express flight landing in Roanoke, Virginia skidded off the end of Runway 34 and came to a stop in the EMAS — the engineered materials arresting system designed to safely stop aircraft when braking alone isn’t enough. Thankfully, there were no injuries, and everyone walked away. Although everything turned out okay, what makes this incident stand out is what happened inside the cockpit. According to the preliminary information, the First Officer repeatedly warned the Captain about the deteriorating weather and the wet runway, and even called for a go-around. Despite those warnings, the Captain continued the landing — and the jet wasn’t able to stop in time. This is a reminder that aviation safety is a team sport. Nobody flies alone — and when weather, runway conditions, and cockpit communication all come together, the safest call is often to wait it out.
