At dawn on 25 October 1983, the US and a coalition of Caribbean countries invaded the island nation of Grenada. Operation Urgent Fury would seek military occupation of the Commonwealth nation after a coup deposed the revolutionary Prime Minister Maurice Bishop. The result would be the first direct clash between the Americans and the Cubans during the cold war, a conflict that saw Britain sidelined despite Grenada being a former British colony.
