Video Description

In June 1999, NATO forces entered Kosovo as part of the multinational peacekeeping Kosovo Force (KFOR). It followed a controversial three-month bombing campaign by NATO against the Serbian-dominated forces of Yugoslavia, whose fight against the Albanian separatist Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) had escalated into the systematic ethnic cleansing of Kosovo’s ethnic Albanian population. Under threat of a NATO ground invasion, Serb forces eventually agreed to withdraw from Kosovo, making way for KFOR’s entry and the return of hundreds of thousands of refugees displaced by the conflict. As Serb forces completed their withdrawal, NATO troops faced the new challenge of keeping the peace as ethnic Albanians carried out revenge attacks on Kosovo’s Serb population. Using archival news footage to document the conflict day by day, this video is the fourth and final in a series covering the Kosovo War of 1998–99, from its outbreak in March 1998 to the arrival of NATO peacekeepers in June 1999.
