We’re building a new chicken house for our 30 chickens. Living off-grid on a mountain our chickens are a large part of our lives and are essential to our self-sufficient dreams. In an unconventional (and highly contested) way, we have them roaming free across our land, living wonderful lives eating all sorts of plants and bugs, and in return we receive highly nutritious and organic eggs to feed our family, as well as lots of rich compost for our vegetable garden. Over time we will look to process some chickens for meat to improve our self-sufficiency further - although to date, neither myself, Robbie or Sage have mustered the hunter gatherer instincts required to achieve such a task. We’ve spent one month designing the new house, it’s going to be a dry stone wall and wooden roof, with a fenced outdoor wooden greenhouse style structure. We’re going to try really hard to make something we’re genuinely proud of in this chicken house project, something that will last for generations to come, bring us joy everyday and fits into the landscape. In classic style, we had no idea just how difficult this project would become - stay tuned to the end where we complete our dry stone wall - moving 860 stones, weighing more than 15 tonnes, transported from the furthest reaches of our 14 acre land.
