On March 29, 1461, fifty thousand to eighty thousand Englishmen fought in a blizzard on a Yorkshire plateau in the Wars of the Roses. Yorkist King Edward IV's 36,000 men faced 42,000 Lancastrians. The battle lasted ten hours—soldiers fought with bills and poleaxes, bodies piled three high, and the melee never stopped until Lancastrians broke at 5 PM. The Cock Beck ravine filled with corpses as fleeing soldiers drowned in armor or were cut down. So many bodies choked the stream that survivors walked across on a bridge of dead. 28,000 to 38,000 men died—half of all combatants, one percent of England's population killed in one day.
