💈 Becoming Puro Handsome With A San Antonio Wet Shave! We loved meeting Tommie Gonzalez, owner of Puro Handsome Barbershop, and hearing his story 🙌🏼 ▶️ Watch the haircut video with Tommie here: https://youtu.be/1-N2B8FDDZQ Tommie hails from Brownsville, Texas and had a career in television broadcast marketing as well as the music industry prior to making the switch to becoming a barber. Work took him far from his home in San Antonio, Texas, to Berlin, Germany, and Scandinavia. However, with the proliferation of digital music downloads, Tommie became increasingly disillusioned with the industry. "I didn't find any value in it anymore," Tommie explained. A haircut, however, is something that can never be downloaded, streamed, or delivered to your door! This was a reassuring awakening for Tommie. Depressed and no longer happy with the direction of his place in the music industry, it was a chance meeting within a simple three-chaired barbershop in Oslo, Norway, that proved to be a pivotal turning point! The shop was owned by an older barber who had been cutting hair for over 40 years in the same location just off a small breezeway near a performance hall called the Folketeateret. The inside of the shop was a collection of seemingly random items that had taken over the space, and in between the magazine piles and boxes were three barber chairs. Waiting by his chair was a barber who was happy to receive the next customer and share a moment or story. A low-resolution picture framed of the barber with his old Corvette proudly hung from the barber's mirror! "He just made me feel like I was the most important person in the world," added Tommie, "He made me feel like I was welcome there.” And this was at a time when Tommie was down and heartbroken, and he says, “nothing made me feel good.” He remembers this barber just put him in the best mood he had been in a very long time ❤️ ✨ So in 2016, Tommie enrolled in barber school and began his barbering journey. Now Tommie owns two Puro Handsome barbershops in downtown San Antonio 💈 He is quick to share his San Antonio roots and desire to promote local culture. Inside, the shop is a small art gallery of local artists, products are locally sourced, and you can ask the barbers anything about the San Antonio area! Tommie explained the loose translation of "puro" as "100%, through and through, genuine, any synonym you can imagine of those adjectives.” If you ask locals the meaning of puro, you will get a lot of different interesting beautiful answers, "and none of them are wrong!" Tommie adds. He thinks, "It's a very unique and special word for this community." Much like his vision for Puro Handsome, an immersive experience and uniquely San Antonian!
