Ready for a classic haircut in a beautifully preserved 1960s local community Ohio Barber Shop? 💈💇🏻‍♂️ It was such a pleasure to meet Bryce Howard, owner of Kettering Barber Company in Dayton, Ohio, and hear his story about how one experience at a barbershop changed his life! Bryce had been working for six years in the medical field and had studied nursing for a year. He thought his professional path was going to be in the medical field for life, however, just before his wedding he decided to go downtown to visit a "real barber." 💈 In the past, Bryce said he typically visited chain chop shops for a haircut. Upon entering the traditional barbershop he was immediately made to feel welcomed and was taken by how the barbers enjoyed their work and were able to make people feel good. The moment that changed his life's path was when the barber applied lather to his neck and gave a straight razor neck shave. After leaving the barbershop, Bryce remembers seeing his reflection in his car and thinking “Wow!" about how he looked and felt good. Still in the car, Bryce immediately called his soon-to-be wife and told her, "It's time to switch careers!” Bryce's journey to becoming a barber began with a deep dive into barbering history. Bryce found himself quickly falling in love with the industry. Within a year, Bryce was enrolled in barber school and preparing a career transition into barbering all while juggling his previous job as a full-time medical professional. Just a few months before graduating from barber school, Bryce was approached with a life-changing proposal. An opportunity to continue the legacy of Max's Barber Shop, named after the original owner, a shop that was established in 1965. ✨ Almost 60 years ago, Max and his wife Josephine dreamed of opening a barbershop 💕 Bryce said the couple built Max's Barber Shop "with hard work, faith, and a whole lot of love!” When Max retired, the barber shop was passed to one of his barbers named Ralph. When Ralph passed away so his wife called Max & Josephine. They wanted the shop to go to another barber. Max contacted the barber college which is how Bryce was approached about continuing this traditional barbershop. With the encouragement and support of his wife, Bryce took the plunge. Of course this was a risk, and Bryce constantly wondered if he had made the right decision. Through it all, Bryce said his wife always believed in him and never worried that he wouldn't make it ❤️ "I wanted it 100% to still stay a traditional barbershop and keep the bones the same and not change too much in terms of the structure," Bryce shared with us. ✨ Bryce says, "Do it because you love it, and because it's the right thing to do.” For Bryce, working as a Nursing Assistant in the medical field was never about the money neither is cutting hair. Bryce's work ethic is driven by a need for people to be cared for and because it is the right thing to do to help people in need.
