In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view on Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) ÖBB-Westbahn between the Austrian capital Vienna (Wien) and Salzburg in 4K/60 frames per second. The route takes us over the Austrian main east-west railway line connecting the capital of Vienna in the east through the Lower and Upper Austria to reach the city of Salzburg, the fourth-largest city in Austria (after Vienna, Graz and Linz) and a gateway towards Bavaria and Germany. Originally built by Empress Elisabeth Railway Company (Kaiserin Elisabeth-Bahn, KEB) in 1860, named to honour Bavarian-born Empress Elisabeth of Austria (known more today by her nickname Sissi), enabling her to take the trip from Vienna to her homeland in Bavaria even before the line was officially opened for traffic. Signifying the connections between Austria and Bavaria, the official opening of Westbahn on August 12th, 1860 was attended by both Austrian emperor Franz Joseph and King Maximillian II of Bavaria as the line from Munich to Salzburg was also completed the same year. Over the following century, the line was nationalized in 1884, double-tracking was completed by 1902 in various stages from east to west, electrification was planned immediately after World War One, but it was completed only in 1952. In 1983 major plans for the line modernization were announced, with the construction of some new sections bypassing older winding route, during 1990s additional bypass tunnels and sections were constructed to speed up the route, with a major milestone achieved in 2012 with the construction of new Vienna approach tunnels through the Wienerwald forests, including a major 13,5km tunnel that enabled direct connection from newly opened Vienna Central Station station cutting the travel time between Vienna and St. Polten in half and moving the Vienna terminus of the line from Vienna Westbahnhof station to newly-build Vienna Central Station (Hbf). Today, Westbahn is a complex network of original route (Alte Westbahn) and new line segments (Neue Westbahn), running either separately or together as a quadruple-track line, allowing maximum design speeds of up to 250km/h, though plans are in progress to further reduce the travel time by the construction of 14,5km Seekirchen approach tunnel to Salzburg that will be constructed from 2026 onwards.
