A Tale of Two Subcontinents The new technology of ancient DNA has in the last year highlighted a remarkable parallel in the prehistory of Europe and India. In both cases, the arrival of farmers from the Middle East after 9,000 years ago catalysed profound population transformations involving mixtures of Middle Eastern-related farmers and local hunter-gatherers. In both cases, the spread of Steppe pastoralists beginning around 5,000 years ago had an equally profound demographic impact, transforming the ancestry of Europe between 4,500-4,000 years ago and India 4,000-3,500 years ago. Mixtures of these three source populations are the primary drivers of genetic variation in both subcontinents today. Presented by The J.
