On November 24th, 2021, at around 10:30pm police dispatch in Aurora, Colorado, received multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting. Witnesses described hearing several gunshots and seeing at least one victim lying on the ground. Officers quickly rushed to the scene, and the following moments were captured on bodycam. EMS quickly transported the victim, 17-year-old Peyton Blitstein, to Parker Adventist Hospital in critical condition. Despite their efforts, Peyton was pronounced dead after extensive attempts to save his life. The shooter, Adam Holen, a recently retired police officer, was also taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to his right hip. Police locked down the crime scene and began interviewing witnesses to gather more details about the shooting. Adam claimed self-defense, but investigators needed to verify if his account matched the evidence and if his actions were justified. After spending a few days in the hospital, Adam was released and brought in for questioning at the police station, where detectives continued to probe the events leading up to the fatal shooting.
