Standardization of tank components was an objective the German Army sluggishly pursued both before and during the war. Particular attention was given to the Panzer III and IV, which were the primary striking force of early to mid-war Panzer divisions. The idea of combining elements from both tanks into a single vehicle was attempted on a few occasions by the Germans even before the outbreak of the war with minimal success. This concept resurfaced in 1944 with the proposal of a new vehicle that aimed to combine various components of the Panzer III and Panzer IV. Commonly referred to today as the Panzer III/IV, this hybrid design was intended to be the final product of this fusion effort. However, the project was short-lived. After only a few months, it was canceled due to insufficient time and resources for full-scale implementation.
